At first blush, fixing ergonomics problems might seem painful to the purse strings. But left unchecked, they can inflict debilitating musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) on employees and deep financial blows to the business. That's why business owners should take a serious look at the workplace.

Employees need access to the right equipment and protective instruments (i.e., workstation furniture and equipment that reduces fatigue, stress, etc.) so they can work safely, efficiently and productively. Many ergonomics problems, such as improper lifting, pushing or pulling heavy loads, can be solved with just a little education and training.

Few federal regulations apply to workplace ergonomics, although the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has campaigned vigorously for such rulings. OSHA research shows several work-related issues over which employers have control often cause MSDs:
